iPhone Apps - what makes it?
What makes a popular app is identical to all media, finding something that captures someone’s interest, or solves a problem.
What tends to an make iPhone app sustainable is quick agile release iterations, get the core features in place - and ship it. iPhone users are a very fickle bunch, and shortly after install, usage is shown to fade. Regular update intervals keep awareness, both of your application, and your brand.
The look and feel also becomes very important on a mobile platform. At this point users know how to use their phone, and don’t want to have to, nor should we try to make them, learn how to use each individual app on the phone, any confusion would likely to cause a quick uninstall. Overloading on functionality can often cross this fine line, aim to fit in one piece of functionality, solve one problem; anything else may take away from app and distract attention from the core purpose.
Although branding and a unique look and feel is achievable, it’s also important to keep to strict usability guidelines and make use of the touch metaphors that iPhone and iPod Touch users have become accustomed to.
It's no secret that the majority of the applications are fun, gimmicky applications. They tend to be easier to produce and require little or no real planning. Whilst they might generate some initial interest by being controversial, and may even produce some financial success. Good and well designed applications shine though and these are the ones that end up on users front page. This is the ultimate target, deliver solid functionality, without being over complicated, and users will follow.
With iPhone continually making strides in the smart-phone market, and the rumoured upcoming iSlate (more to come about this soon) about to do the same in the tablet/portable market. Now is the best opportunity to jump on the AppStore bandwagon.
