What is Umbraco?

Umbraco have produced the video above, which is designed as a 3 minute tour of the Umbraco content management system.

Umbraco is an open source web content management system (CMS) based on the Microsoft .NET platform. It offers an easy-to-use back-end interface that runs in all major web browsers. Although open source, it offers the majority of features associated with enterprise CMS systems including content versioning and scheduling, media library, workflow notifications and multi-lingual support.

  Umbraco has been designed to allow a simple experience for end users, working in the back office is both obvious and appealing. Umbraco does not include anything which is not essential to the task of creating and editing content. Even if you have a very large or advanced website you will be presented with a UI which is tailored specifically for you. You will have no time consuming workflows or over complicated wizards to interfere with your work.
  
  
• Edit and update content from your usual desktop program
  You may find it convenient to update and edit your website content using a desktop program. Umbraco have integrated Microsoft Word 2007 meaning you gain all the benefits of working in a familiar word processor, including automatic spelling and grammar checking, easily inserting images, charts or video directly in Microsoft Word 2007. You can access Umbraco pages directly from your desktop, editing and adding new pages even when offline.
  
  
• Easily undo mistakes
  Mistakes happen, no matter how hard you try to avoid them. Luckily for you, Umbraco will save every version of your content. If you find something is incorrect then you can simply revert back to a previous version and correct the error. The roll back capability allows you to quickly find the version you want, as the differences between the pages are highlighted. As soon as you find the correct version of the page just click save and your mistakes are undone.
  
  
• Keep on top of your website content
  You can easily stay on top of everything that happens to your website content; you can choose to receive an email notification whenever something happens or choose to only be notified of events which interest you. Use the audit trail to examine the history of the website content and if you find mistakes you can always correct them with Umbraco’s roll-back facility.
